Karlovic draws Dimitrov in first round Zagreb Indoors
It is enough to look at the draw to know the real quality of a tournament, and PBZ Zagreb Indoors has never boasted a stronger field. It is not only because German and two-time tournament finalist Michael Berrer has to go through the qualifying tournament, it is also because the first round main draw matchups are already bringing a lot of intriguing encounters. Tournament director, Branimir Horvat, must be thrilled with the depth of the field, even though our Croatian players could have fared better in the draw with some tough opponents. Still, it is up to them ...

Two-time Zagreb winner and the top seed at this year’s tournament, Marin Cilic will have a bye in the first round, as will Italian and No. 2 seed Andreas Seppi. Defending champion Mikhail Youzhny and Austrian Jurgen Melzer will also have byes in the first round.

Croat Ivan Dodig, winner of the 2011 edition, will take on German Benjamin Becker in the first round, and the winner will meet either Ivo Karlovic or 21-year-old talent and recent Brisbane finalist Grigor Dimitrov in the next round.

Wildcards Nikola Mektic and Antonio Veic will each take on respective Australian Open men’s doubles finalists, Igor Sijsling and Robine Haase in the first round, and the final wildcard recipient, Mate Pavic, will face a qualifier.

To round out the doubles draw, defending champions Marcos Baghdatis and Mikhail Youzhny will take on the No.1 team of Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau. Other notable doubles teams include Croats Marin Cilic and Marin Draganja, Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner, as well as Ivo Karlovic teaming up with Frank Moser again.

It’s sure to be a great tournament with great players, and several promising encounters from the very first round!
