Karlovic dismissed Dimitrov in the opening round
Ivo Karlovic scored his first win of the season as he defeated seventh-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (pictured) in the first round of PBZ Zagreb Indoors , winning by 7:6 (3), 7:6 (3) in 90 minutes. He served 18 aces en route to the round of last 16, holding comfortable each of his service games. Neither player had break point during the entire match.
"I finally won. I played better and better every match but this time I won”, Karlovic said. Giant Croat lost all the matches he played this season, including qualifying and doubles events. “This was the best match I have played since April last year”, he added.
It was his first ATP level victory since reaching the semifinals in Moscow in October.
“I practiced with Ivo quite a few times and knew what to expect. It was the best match I've seen him playing in the last couple of months", Dimitrov said.
Young up-and-coming Bulgarian, who played his first ATP level singles final in Brisbane in the opening week of the season, lost in the first round for the third time in a row.
"Off course I expected more, but you have to keep your head up”, Dimitrov said.
Among the winners on Tuesday was also Blaz Kavcic from Slovenia, who defeated compatriot Aljaz Bedene by 6:7 (5), 6:3, 6:3. It was for the first time on any ATP level tournament that two players from Slovenia played against each other.
