Baghdatis in three sets, Lacko retired
Former Zagreb champion Marcos Baghdatis (pictured) scored another victory at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors as he defeated German Tobias Kamke in just over an hour to reach round of 16 on Wednesday.
Cypriot won 6:7 (6), 6:2, 6:4, improving his record at the event to 9-1. He won the title here in 2007 and was semifinalist last year.
"I did not expect him to play so good, I was a bit surprised. He was very agressive and I needed time to adjust. I am happy that I found the way to defeat him”, Baghdatis said after the match.
After losing the first set in the tie breaker Baghdatis served excellent and won all points – 29 out of 29 - on the first serve.
Robin Haase from the Netherlands was successful against Croatian wild card Antonio Veic, coming back from one set down to win 2:6, 6:3, 6:3. Haase, fresh from his runner-up effort in doubles at the Australian Open in Melbourne, hit 15 aces against Veic, who suffered ankle injury last week before the Davis Cup tie against Italy.
“I started really great but he played better and better as the match went on. Haase srved great in the second and third set and I was not able to cope up with him”, Veic said.
Last year’s Zagreb finalist Lukas Lacko from Slovakia suffered an early exit this time, having to retire at 1:1 in the first set against Italian Flavio Cipolla due to the low back injury.
