Veger becomes seventh Croat in main draw
By defeating Ante Pavic in the final round of qualifying, Filip Veger becomes the seventh Croat in the main draw, joining Marin Cilic, Ivan Dodig, Ivo Karlovic, Antonio Veic, Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic.
"I wasn't expecting much even though I'm playing well," admitted Veger who entered as a wildcard into the qualifying tournament. "I came to play one good match and it turned out a lot better."
In the first round of qualifying, Veger defeated the 147th-ranked German Simon Greul, then followed it up with a win over Slovak Kamil Capkovic. In his match versus Pavic, Veger was a set and break up before losing the second set. In the third, Pavic came back and had an early break, but Veger returned to seal the win.
There were two other Croatian players in the final round of qualifying, but their competitors were too good and they both lost.
Dino Marcan was defeated by two-time Zagreb finalist Michael Berrer, but not before giving the German some strong resistance. Although Berrer was up 4-1 in the first set, Marcan came back to win 14 points in a row and even served for the set, but couldn't close it. Marcan was again broken at 3-4 40-15 in the second set and soon thereafter lost the match.
Franco Skugor also lost in two sets to No. 2 qualifier and German Philipp Petzschner. In the first set, Petzschner broke at 4-3 and twice more in the second set, at 3-all and 5-3. Skugor held three break points during the match but was not able to capitalize on any.
Full results from the final round of qualifications: Berrer (1) d. Marcan 7:5, 6:3, Petzschner (2) d. Skugor 6:3, 6:3, Bozoljac d. Viola (3) 2:6, 6:3, 6:2, Veger d. A. Pavic 6:1, 3:6, 6:4.
